Day 9
SERVICE
I've often heard my beautiful wife comment that she 'left the house to do some service for someone' and yet everything else seemed to get done that usually does (or is that my imagination?). Before you read the rest of this blog, just know I think when women say they can do all this stuff in one day they are just LYING. Here's how MY day unfolded.
So, I left the house at 10:00 to do some SERVICE for someone, my dad. You know, the kind of work that isn't required but you do because you want to help someone, or maybe because you love them, or maybe just because it feels good. You see, the floor of his shed has fallen through and the chances are someone will fall through it if it's not replaced.
Have you seen my dad's shed?! He has all sorts of treasures in there. My dad is the kind of dad who always has what you might need. Seriously!
GOOD GRIEF! On the way over, our youngest child, the only one NOT in school, decided to take another 17 minute nap, waking after just 5 minutes of emptying the shed and robbing me of the opportunity to get in a rhythm of working. After he cried for a few minutes, ate a bunch of food and then got distracted in the toy room, I was able to slip away to begin helping grandpa again.
The idea was to move the contents of the shed onto the patio, replace the floor, and then return his belongings to the shed. The job is a big one, so I knew it would take a couple of days.
Rain chances, 20%. HELLO! All summer long we've been in a drought! Who would have bet on a 20% chance of rain?! After emptying 1/3 of the shed, a downpour erupted, almost out of nowhere! And not just a little sprinkle, it was literally a 'storm'. Thinking the weatherman really did mean just a 20% chance created in me just enough doubt that I was willing to bet against the odds...I lost. Everything, gloves, paper, wood, tools, the usual stuff found in a shed got soaked.
THE WORST PART, I wasn't even there to help. I had left the piles for a while so I could return home and pick up my son for a dentist appointment, leaving my poor father watching everything get soaked because he was inside, babysitting two small boys too young to leave alone.
A Quick Visit to the Dentist?
We arrived at the dentist's office in plenty of time to fill out the extensive 'new patient' papers for our 2 pm appointment. If I hadn't known I was at the dentist's office, I would have thought I was filling out an application to join the FBI. And, if I had known the appointment would take nearly 3 hours, I think I would have cancelled the appointment all together. At one point the dentist came in and said, "Sorry about how long it's taking. We are sort of short staffed today. Can I get you something?" I thought to myself, "a few tarps for my dad's stuff that's getting soaked while I sit here waiting to get back to help put EVERYTHING BACK INTO THE SHED?!?!?!?!"
"Nope," I surrendered. At that point, I had given up any hope that the stuff would be salvageable.
On the bright side...that's one way to clean out the shed.
HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU WOMEN GET ANYTHING DONE?
