So, today a knock at the door interrupted my preparations for dinner. I walked to the door and opened it to find a man standing at the back of a pickup truck with a freezer in the bed.
Now, I would have told him right at the beginning, that we didn't need any meat, that our freezer was currently loaded with fruits and vegetables that I had prepared for canning later in the winter. I would have told him that the frozen breads and Christmas cookies (yes, already working on those), and other items left no room for any meats, even if it was a deal too good to pass by.
He started off like a racehorse: "These are high quality meats" and "only 10 more minutes" and "special buy" and "from the best sources" and "Doing this for 12 years" and "Grass fed" and, and, and.
My goodness, the only person I know who can say more things than that man said in just a few moments, is an auctioneer, or my 3 year old.
I tried to interrupt him several times, but he always had just one more thing to say that would convince me to pull out my wallet and give him money, even if I didn't take any meat. But on he went. "Several neighbors in the neighborhood take advantage" 'You might have seen me before" "I'm from this area"...FINALLY, he said, "Would you like to buy some meat?"
All of that and only 3 words turned him away: "We're mostly vegetarians."
