Urban Farming, Knock! Knock!

It wasn't long ago that my sister-in-law shared that one of her chickens needed to be separated from the rest of the 'flock'. It just so happened that one of our middle children was getting ready to celebrate a birthday soon, so, put 1 and 1 together and voila! Birthday present!

I spent a few hours creating a chicken coop for the new guest and took my son to go pick up the prized poultry.

We are now several months into our experiment and have truly enjoyed the eggs she gives us. She lays about 2 eggs every 3 days. And, for all you 'Organic' -crazed people out there (just like me), there is NO COMPARISON between her eggs and store bought organic eggs. Her yolks are the deepest orange of any eggs I've ever seen!

So, I'm in the office one morning with our youngest son. I'm working on my computer, he's watching a movie beside me. Suddenly, we hear a knocking at the front door. INSTANTLY, our youngest shoots off the futon yelling, "Mine! Mine! Mine!" (his way of saying, 'I'll get it!').

I follow him to the door and look out the window to see who it is before I open the door. But, to my surprise, I don't see anyone. So, thinking it was the UPS man leaving a package, I open the door. There was no brown truck. There was no package. The only thing out there was a yellow chicken staring right at me! She had wandered her way around to the front door and knocked on the door!

Silly Chicken!
