Intentional Cleaning and The Cleaning List

Day 14

Quote from my wife: "I noticed that you didn't feed the kids lunch when I got home from the event I was helping with and the kids all wanted my food....can't fool me dear sweet husband of mine:) Poor kids might not make it through this..."

I would like all to know that the kids weren't complaining about being hungry, after all, they had just eaten a HUGE breakfast just a few hours before...Isn't it natural for kids to let you know when they are hungry?!

CLEANING LISTS were designed by someone who was angry at their spouse for saying something goofy like, "Wow, this house is a mess!" or "What DID you do while I was gone?!" The way I see it, if you sit down and make a list of things to clean then you limit yourself to what you can do in a day. That way, when the spouse returned, there was the expectation that certain things would look better. I have had lists before. And usually, I feel this ENORMOUS pressure to ignore all other indications of needs in the home so that I can add a few checks to the list. It's NOT good for my emotional health!

On Sundays, I don't do much housework. But, when the HIGH CHAIR doesn't catch the banana pieces our youngest doesn't get into his mouth, or the cheerios, or the rice crispies, or green beans (you get the point), I clean the floor around his chair. This is INTENTIONAL CLEANING. I can do it and feel good about getting it done, because the floor looks better when I finish. Kids spill the milk at the breakfast table...I clean it up (or have them clean it up)...INTENTIONAL CLEANING. When I make a meal, I clean up dishes...INTENTIONAL CLEANING. Also, it fits right in with my new philosophy on 'To do Lists'...do it, write it, check it off.
