She wasn't supposed to DRINK it!

Gardeners!

It's getting to be that time of year again. The time when I pull out the seeds and begin planting our gardens. Yes. It is quite that time. My thinking is that we are going to create our own spring this year. We're tired of waiting for Mother Nature.

For those of you with a regular garden, you have plenty of time to wait. May is a long way off yet. But, when you are dealing with a Tower Garden, you can start a lot earlier. However, you do have tasks that are a little different from a traditional garden:

  1. There's no dirt. Seeds are sprouted in rock wool cubes. As the seeds sprout, their roots grow through the rock wool, just as they would through dirt. Once the roots can be seen growing out the bottom of the cubes, we put them into the Tower Garden.
  2. You mix the nutrients into the water (there's no dirt, remember) so the plants have something to 'grow' with.
The nutrients are the same you would find in a traditional fertilizer. Now, these must be mixed according to the instructions, or the poor seedlings might suffer from too much or too little. So, I used a gallon jug.

Now, the hope is that if I do things right, my garden will look like this again this year (and yes, this is a picture of my Tower Garden from last year.

Since there isn't any dirt, I mix my nutrient solution into the water and add it to the sprouting seeds. USUALLY, I would mark this container so that others know not to drink it. This time, I forgot to label it and got called away to do something else...I forgot to get back to it and...

When my wife poured herself a tall glass of water and took a nice long drink, I didn't think anything of it. Until, that is, my wife made a horrible face and spit into the kitchen sink, saying, "What is wrong with that water?!" Then it hit me: I never labeled the container...

She wasn't supposed to DRINK it! It was meant for the Tower Garden!
