Sawing Logs A Service Project

This past weekend I took my boys to Michigan to do some service for grandma and grandpa. In preparing for their new home, they had 22 trees on their property cut down. Those 22 trees were left in 45, 16 foot logs. We went to clear up the brush and cut up logs into firewood for the next couple years.

I learned a few things from that trip:
  1. A 7 hour drive with kids will always take 10.
  2. Sleeping with a 3-year old after working all day makes for a sleepless night.
  3. When cutting logs with a chainsaw, it’s best if the chain isn’t on backwards.
  4. Before buying a chainsaw, from a friend, make sure it’s in good condition and not leaking gasoline or have any broken parts that can’t be replaced because it’s too old and parts aren’t made for it any more (not that it happened or anything).
Ultimately, my boys learned to work hard. They learned that serving others is part of growing up. They learned that some projects take longer than others. They learned that helping others is not only part of living together in a community, it’s whats right. We all learned that spending time together was something we wanted to do lore of this year. We also learned that helping grandma and grandpa was a GREAT way to spend a weekend.
